At one point or another, an emergency plumbing situation is bound to happen. Plumbing emergencies usually happen without any warning and often when your local plumbing businesses are already closed, for instance, on nights and weekends. Not only are plumbing emergencies an inconvenience, but they also can have consequences on the home if they’re not taken care of right away. While some plumbing issues may be able to be resolved with the help of tools you have in the home, there are many issues that may be too large or unable to be fixed by doing it yourself.

What To Do In A Plumbing Emergency

As any type of emergency would, plumbing emergencies often incite panic in the household. During these unfortunate events, it is best to keep as calm as possible. You can have peace of mind knowing that North Peachtree Plumbing Co. is available 24/7 for emergencies just like this! Here are a few things that you should do in case of a plumbing emergency:

1.Turn Off The Water Source Quickly

In any sort of plumbing emergency, you will need to turn off the water source as quickly as you can once you’ve located it. For emergency toilet issues, the shut off valve will likely be behind the toilet. For bigger emergencies, the main water valve in your home should be turned off immediately.

2.Turn Off The Water Heater

In a plumbing emergency, it is beneficial to turn off the water heater to ensure that there is no damage that happens to it or your home. Turning off the water heater will prevent hot water from rising up inside of it and causing a potential explosion. *If you have a gas water heater, be sure to turn the gas off before anything else.*

3.Locate Any Leaks And Address Them

Small leaks may be easier to address than larger emergency leaks that may occur. If you have any, plumbers tape can be helpful while waiting for the emergency plumber to arrive. If you do not own plumbers tape, small rags and towels can be helpful in this situation to prevent water damage in other areas of the home. Once the plumber arrives, let them know about the leaks and how you have addressed them.

4.Open Up Your Outdoor Drains

Even after you have shut off the water valves, there may still be water in your pipes. By opening up the outdoor drains and spigots, it will ensure that any leftover water will be moved out and away from your home.

5.Call 24/7 Plumbing Assistance

When an emergency is happening it is common for panic to take over and make us forget some of the most important things to do. Calling a plumber right away once an emergency happens is the best way to make sure that no further damage is caused to your home or the people in it.

How To Help Prevent Emergencies

No emergencies can be completely prevented. You can, however, schedule ahead for any plumbing maintenance that seems to be running slow or on the verge of having an issue. Scheduling ahead for things such as slow running drains, a water-heater flush, minor plumbing repairs, and leaking faucets can be beneficial in the long run.
